Jelle J P Wouters is an anthropology professor and the director of research and development at Royal Thimphu College, Bhutan. He studied anthropology in Amsterdam, Oxford, and Shillong, and is the author or editor of 11 books, including In the Shadows of Naga Insurgency (Oxford University Press, 2018), Vernacular Politics in Northeast India: Democracy, Ethnicity, & Indigeneity (Oxford University Press, 2022), and, with Milinda Banerjee, Subaltern Studies 2.0: Being Against the Capitalocene (Chicago: Prickly Paradigm Press, 2022).
As pets, animals are care workers, giving solace to lonely humans. In none of these economic spheres are animals passive tools. Like human working classes, animal workers also constantly resist and rebel.
