Muhammad Afdillah

Dr. Muhammad Afdillah is a lecturer of Interreligious Studies at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, Indonesia. He received his doctorate degree in Islamic studies and Christian-Muslim relations at Hartford International University for Religion and Peace (HIU) in Connecticut, USA. At UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya, he teaches World Religion, Interreligious Dialogue, and Academic Study of Religion. His research interests are in interreligious relations, Christian-Muslim relations, Indonesian Muslim, and religion and the State, for which he has published one monograph, several co-authored books, and several peer-reviewed journal articles. He is also Director of the Center for the Study of Religion and Peace at the same university, where he leads his fellow researchers in mainstream interreligious dialogue and peacebuilding. Furthermore, Dr. Afdillah is an editor and reviewer for several journals, including Religió (since 2014) and The Muslim World (2017-2022). His latest publications include “Interreligious Marriage in Indonesia: Institutional Competition, Religious Monopolies, and the Dynamics of a Regulated Religious Economy” (2026) and “Scriptural Nationalism in Print: Genre Partition and the Making of the Other in the Persatuan Islam’s Risalah (2005–2025)” (2026).
